Step 1
The world of politics is complex and can be confusing at times. To make sense of it, people who study it divide it in major categories. In this activity, you will be introduced to four of these categories. Two of them fit at opposite ends of the economic axis. Remember Communism and Capitalism? Communism fits to the left of the economic axis, and Capitalism to the right of it.

Communism------------------------------------------------Capitalism
Look
at the table below and see where you fit in the spectrum. If you
agree with everything on the right, you are a true capitalist. If you
agree with every statements
on the left you are a true communist. In Canada, we are somewhere in the middle. Our economy is based on principles from both although some political parties are more on the right and others more on the left.
Now let's look at the ideology axis. Are you more Conservative or LIberal?
These categories refer to the freedom citizens can enjoy in their private lives. For instance, some countries allow certain practices that are illegal in other countries. Think of contentious issues such as abortion, same sex marriage, drug use etc. Canadian citizens enjoy a lot of freedom in terms of what they can or cannot do but there are some countries that are even more liberal than Canada. When the government of a country exercise total control over its citizens, such as North Korea or Germany under Hitler, they are called totalitarian or fascist. Fortunately, Canada do not have such government. :)
